CHENNAI: The Suburban Police Commissioner’s office has handled all kinds of cases pertaining to lovers’ disputes. But of late, Police Commissioner S R Jangid seems to be working overtime not for resolving disputes but for uniting lovers in matrimony.

Jangid now has at least one case  per week of love-struck couples seeking his help for marriage.

On Monday, a couple that had eloped and got married, came to the Commissioner’s office seeking protection from their parents. “We met each other while I was studying in college. I had approached his company for a sponsorship,” said Saranya (name changed). The couple had got married on Monday without Saranya’s father’s approval and promptly came to Jangid for ‘protection.’

He gave them a patient hearing and told the girl’s parents that as the couple had got married out of free will and were happy, nothing could be done about it.

“He is a good boy, you don’t worry,” he consoled the girl’s mother who had also come to the commissioner’s office.

The girl’s father, a cop himself, was then asked by Jangid to organise the wedding function and Jangid promised to attend it.

The father of the bride was overcome with emotion.

In another instance, on May 22, a Muslim, Renu Amir Bardeen (19) had eloped with and got married to a Christian, Joseph Sethuru (25) at a temple. They had been working together at a small factory. It was at Jangid’s office that the couple got their parents’ approval.

Recently, 20-year-old Mary approached the Commissioner alleging that her lover Rajpandi had ditched her after getting her pregnant. With Jangid taking up the case, Rajpandi quickly tied the knot.
