CHENNAI: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday directed the officials to construct temporary houses within 15 days for 1,869 families in Nilgiris district who lost their houses during the recent rains. They are also instructed to build permanent houses within six months. The Slum Clearance Board would construct the temporary houses at a cost of Rs 70,000 each and those in camps would be shifted to these houses on a warfooting. Decisions to this effect were taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at the Secretariat. Meanwhile in Udhagamandalam the AIADMK accused the failure on part of the DMK-led State to strictly implement the masterplan (new building rules) for the massive landslides in the Nilgiris district. The party activists also staged a demonstration demanding that the State distribute adequate relief assistance and commodities to the affected families, in front of Collector’s Office in Ooty on Monday.
