CHENNAI: Dr S Krishnamurthi, Adviser (Research and Planning), Cancer Institute, Adyar, and a Padmashri awardee, died here today.

According to a release from the institute, Krishnamurthi (90), who was conferred the Padmashri in 1970 in recognition of his efforts towards treatment of cancer, was associated with the cancer institute, started in the 1950s.

Beginning with a small four-bed hospital, he has been instrumental in developing the institution to its present size and reputation over the years, it said.

In 1983 Krishnamurthi became a member of the Advisory Committee on Cancer Control and Planning of the Government of India.

He is survived by son and daughter.
