'Plastic roads for 1,000 kms soon'

Rural areas in Tamil Nadu may expect a sigh of relief as the State Government plans to lay plastic roads for 1,000 kms this year. Addressing a World Environment Day function, organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, M C Sampath, Minister for Environment and Pollution Control said, “In last two years, rural areas got roads for the distance covering 1254.13 kms worth Rs 153 crore. These roads were laid using 917 metric ton plastic wastes. This year we are extending the plastic roads for another 1,000 km worth Rs 50 crores,” he said and added that there were plans to establish eco-clubs using Rs 80 lakh later this year in 200 schools.

He also distributed awards worth Rs 30 lakh to the three best schools, three best villages and three best self-help groups who were taken efforts to abolish the use of plastics.
