PIL seeks to expedite gas pipeline work

Express News Service

A public interest writ petition has been filed in the HC for a direction to GAIL to execute the Kochi-Bangalore pipeline project via the western districts of the State expeditiously.

The first bench of Acting Chief Justice RK Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan before which the petition from advocate K Shyam Sundar of Mandaveli came up for hearing on Friday, ordered notice to the Union Petroleum Ministry and GAIL, returnable in two weeks.

Petitioner contended that the project was envisaged by the Union Petroleum Ministry for supply of gas through underground pipeline, which was primarily intended for the industrial, transport and household purpose. The delay in the implementation of the project was against public interest. The benefits of the scheme was aimed only at  public interest. The GAIL was lethargic and not serious in carrying out the project, the petitioner alleged.
