Express News Service

The prime accused in Mercedes Benz accident case, Shaji, who is also son of Empee Group Chairman M P Purushothaman, is expected to hand himself over to police on Tuesday, according to sources.

Shaji was accused of rash and negligent driving in an inebriated condition in which a 13-year-old boy lost his life and a girl suffered multiple fractures in her arm on May 25. Sources close to Shaji’s family told a senior police officer that Shaji had contacted friends and informed that he would return to Chennai on Tuesday. However, the family refused to reveal his whereabouts.

“We were told that Shaji will come by Tuesday and we are hoping that the family was sharing genuine information with us,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, rumours were doing rounds that Shaji was picked up by the Mumbai Police after he arrived in the country, which the local police denied.
