The silver jubilee celebrations of the 1988 Commerce batch of the Loyola College, were held on the college premises on June 8.
With over 40 members of the batch in attendance along with their families, memories from almost two and a half decades ago were recalled and poems in praise of the college were recited, as teachers and professors met their former students.
A former student, now a businessman based in Delhi, said that he had taken a break from his busy schedule just to make it to the silver jubilee celebrations. “I felt it was important for me to reconnect with my batch mates. We intend to reacquaint ourselves with each other,” he said.
Joseph Xavier, the former principal of Loyola College, said that it was the great work of eminent personalities from the college that has led the HRD Ministry of the Government of India to consider making the institution a fully autonomous body in the near future.
“Maybe one of the reasons for the Ministry signalling its intent to make Loyola one of the four fully autonomous colleges in the entire country is because of people like you who are associated with it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Xavier Alphonse, Director, Alumni Association of Loyola College spoke of the active role the college alumni has played in the development of the institute over the last few years.
Speaking about the Global Congress which was organised by students last year, Alphonse said that 44 former students and eminent members of society, including judges, lawyers, businessmen and actors had received honours from the institute, for their contribution to their respective fields.
He added that the alumni had been instrumental in raising around half the funds required for the construction of the Loyola School of Commerce and Economics, which has around 48 classrooms, with 15 smart classrooms for students.
