A 60-year-old pooja articles seller from Mandaveli jumped off the third floor of a hospital where he was being treated after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, here on Tuesday.
Police said T Venu, a resident of Solaiyappan Temple Street in Mandaveli, who was admitted to Dr Ranga Hospital in Devanathan Street in the same area since June 6, climbed on to the third floor of the hospital and leaped off the building after he took his morning tea at 6.15 am.
He sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to the same hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries later. Preliminary investigations revealed that Venu was a diabetic for over a decade and was under medication. His condition worsened on June 6 and was admitted to the hospital where the doctors diagnosed him with tuberculosis. Venu was upset over the additional medication which he had to take to control TB. He had complained about this on a couple of occasions to family.
His son-in-law Gopi said Venu was upset over his health condition which had become complicated after he was diagnosed with TB.
“He (Venu) told me that his tablets alone make his meals and he was having a nauseating sensation all through the day because of that. After morning tea, he told us that he was going for a morning walk. Later, we were told that he had jumped off the hospital building,” Gopi said.
Venu’s body was moved to the Royapettah Government Hospital. Venu used to sell pooja articles in front of the Mylapore Temple for decades. Venu is survived by his wife Savithri and three daughters. Abiramapuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
