Amendment sought to make Jaya PM

Express News Service

A public interest writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court for a direction to the Centre to dispose of a representation, which among other things suggested amendment to the Constitution to enable TN CM J Jayalalithaa, as the Prime Minister of India after the elections to the LS.

The first bench comprising Acting Chief Justice R K Agrawal and Justice M Sarthiyanarayanan, before which the PIL from senior advocate P R Krishnan, came up for hearing on Tuesday, adjourned it by a day to ascertain its maintainability.

According to petitioner, the representation consisted of three objectives. The first was for the Centre to review the British cabinet model that perpetuated political injustice to the South. No one from South India had ever become the PM, except Narasimha Rao (AP) and H D Deve Gowda (Karnataka), who occupied the seat ‘accidentally’.

The second objective was to consider an amendment to the Constitution or an alternative to the British cabinet system by discussion and appointment of a Constitution Review Panel to prevent perpetuation of political injustice meted out to South. The third objective was a plea to the people of India to consider choosing TN CM J Jayalalithaa as next PM.
