Most often sarees get compartmentalised, as per the occasion you choose to drape them. Making a shift from the categorising of sarees, Suryakala, an initiative by Kala Thamby, offers a variety of versatile sarees that can double up as an exclusive evening wear for parties or as a smart office wear with oodles of style.
Thamby converted her passion into profession twenty years ago with the fabric unit. Not satisfied with the designs available in boutiques, she began designing for her family and friends, which was appreciated and well received. Encouraged by the positive response she began taking orders from outside.
Over the years, Suryakala has added a new dimension to the saree culture, taking inspiration from many elements.
“Inspired by nature, Suryakala’s designs are all about taking traditional fabrics and giving a contemporary touch making it exclusive yet at the same time affordable,” she says.
In various materials from light silks sarees to chanderis, the highlight are the sarees’ contrast blouses that complement the look. Bright colours, earthy shades and pastels with borders in the combinations of zaris and embroidery blend the traditional appeal along with a touch of elegance.
And, of course there is bridal range of the six yard, adding a signature style exclusive to Suryakala.
Thamby adds that the unit has a set of weavers who translate the designs into sarees, in materials that are again exclusive to the designs.
“We work closely with our weavers who translates our artistic vision into fabrics of various yarns combined and woven together with rare colour combinations. We also do exclusive hand block prints on naturals fabrics like cottons, linens, tussars, pure silks etc,” she adds. Suryakala also undertakes wholesale bulk orders for block printing.
