I am innocent, claims driver of Shaji

Express News Service

In a fresh development to the high-profile accident in the city involving the Empee Group Chairman’s son, the driver of the car, R M Kumar, arrested by police for rash and negligent driving, claimed that he was innocent.

A Mercedes Benz belonging to the company had run over a 13-year-old boy and a few others sleeping on a pavement in Egmore on May 25. The boy later died in a city hospital. Kumar, the driver of the Empee Group Chairman’s son Shaji, moved a bail petition in the Principal Sessions Court contending that he was innocent and that he had nothing to do with the alleged offence. He claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case. Police had arrested Kumar on charges of drunken driving.

Interestingly, Shaji too moved the same court for grant of anticipatory bail.

He said that he did not travel in the car as claimed by the police despite the fact that he owned that car bearing the registration number TN 01 X 5959.

Special Teams Formed

At least five special teams were formed by the City Police on Tuesday to trace and arrest Shaji. The car was reportedly driven by Shaji.

Sources said the teams rushed to Coimbatore, Mumbai and Kerala where they had suspected that Shaji was hiding to evade arrest.

Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Karuna Sagar  was directly supervising the investigations on instruction from City Police Commissioner S George.
