Two die, 16 hurt as bus bangs pillar

A state-run bus rammed a concrete pillar near Maduravoyal, killing two persons - the bus conductor and a woman passenger - during the wee hours of Tuesday.

Police said the bus operated by State Express Transport Corporation plying between Bangalore and Chennai, was driven by Manikanda Rajesh, (32), of Cuddalore.

The bus which left Bangaluru by 9.30 pm on Monday was moving past Onion Mandi Bus stop in Maduravoyal when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed a concrete pillar erected for a flyover around 4.45 am on Tuesday.

The front portion of the bus got mangled and conductor Thayappan, (37), of Tuticorin was crushed to death, whereas the bus driver had a miraculous escape. Kamakshi, (45), a passenger from Hosur, died at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel were pressed into service and it took about 1 hour for the team to rescue all the passengers.

The sixteen injured people  including 9 women, were moved to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital.

The accident threw traffic out of gear for about an hour on Chennai-Bangalore Highway. The Poonamallee Traffic Investigation police have registered a case and are investigating.

The bus conductor who died in the accident is survived by wife Tamil Selvi, (35) and two children - Isakki Nandini, (4) and Tamil Elilan (2).
