28-year-old woman chain snatcher held

A 28-year-old woman was arrested by Kancheepuram police for allegedly snatching gold chains weighing around 20 sovereigns from five women during the car festival at Varadaraja Perumal Temple on Wednesday.

According to police, Chitra alias Lakshmi (28), a resident of Manapakkam in Tiruchy, was held for allegedly snatching gold chains of five women - Putheriammal of Kancheepuram, Vijayalakshmi of Pillayarpalayam, Jothimala of Kancheepuram, Senbagam of Guduvanchery and Indumathi of Korattur - during the car festival at the temple premises on Tuesday.

Based on the complaints lodged by the women, police had intensified search operations at the bus stands and railway stations.

It was during one such search operation that Chitra was arrested.

Police sources said that Chitra was an active member of a chain-snatching gang.

Police is on the look out for her her accomplices in a bid  to recover the stolen chains by other members of the gang.
