Students of Shasun Jain College for Women, along with RASA, an NGO and centre for theatre arts and special needs, have come up with a team Artisenet for participation in the Enactus National Competition, which aims at bringing together top student, academic and business leaders from across the country.
The competition is also seen as an opportunity by students of the Shasun college, established in 2005, to work for the upliftment of the physically and mentally challenged. The team targeted the above-18 age group of persons who suffer from multiple disorders like autism, Down Syndrome and other physical and mental disorders. Through Artisenet, the students of RASA, a select group of differently abled, were trained by 10 Enactus Shasun students and two faculty members of Shasun to make door mats, telephone mats, wall hangings, dining sets out of old sarees and so on.
B Poorna, principal, Shasun Jain College for Women, commenting on the Artisenet project, said, “With the current year projects, the Enactus Shasun team of students have three projects running side by side with focus on people with mental retardation, Down Syndrome and autism from RASA, by helping them make paper cups, envelopes, paper covers, etc. The second project is with women earning low wages, who were taught to make paper bags by the students. The third project with rag pickers is production of bio gas from food and vegetable waste for stable business and a steady income.”
The event organised by Enactus, an organisation which aims at developing socially responsible business leaders, is said to give additional opportunities for leaders to connect and enable the Enactus donor companies to recruit future talent through the career fair. Special events at the competitions are expected to provide unique opportunities for networking, mentorship and idea exchange.
