CHENNAI: Questioning the resignation by an AIADMK MLA, opposition PMK today said those who "force" bypolls should be barred from contesting elections.

Party founder S Ramadoss said that P Vetrivel, who had quit as legislator from Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency here yesterday, had not mentioned the reason for doing so, nevertheless "even the commoners are aware of the fact why he resigned".

Though there was no word from AIADMK on the reason for Vetrivel's resignation, it is being seen as a move to enable re-election of party supremo J Jayalalithaa. There would be a requirement of her becoming an MLA within six months if she once again assumes charge as the Chief Minister.

The PMK chief, in a statement, maintained that a bypoll after four years of assembly was unnecessary, adding it was a waste of time and using people's tax money. He said the Election Commission and Centre should make efforts to amend the Representation of People's Act in this regard.
