Terrible twin of Moulivakkam building that killed 61 workers two years ago bites the dust

The 11-storey building at Moulivakkam was demolished at 6.51 pm today after missing three deadlines earlier in the day.

CHENNAI: The 11-storey building at Moulivakkam, the twin of the ill-fated one that came down crashing over two years ago killing 61 workers, was demolished at 6.51 pm today after missing three deadlines earlier in the day. The delay is learnt to have been caused due to technical glitches.

With a battery of media, police and govt officials gathered on the spot, the latest schedule set for the demolition was 5.45 pm. But with light quickly vanishing, it began to look like the demolition may be postponed to another day. But finally at 6.51 pm, the demolition was conducted, and within a matter of seconds the building was flattened down to the earth.

The original deadline set was 4 pm. But it was shifted to 5 pm and then to 5.45 pm. But it could not be carried at 5.45 pm too, but was finally done after about an hour.

Explosives went off on the fifth floor and the first floor at 6.51 pm resembling a massive Deepavali firework, and in less than five seconds, the entire building was reduced to dust.  

The building collapsed neatly, crumbling vertically down within its own plot of land, likely causing no damage to the properties nearby.
