CHENNAI: A 22-year-old man who allegedly sprayed insect repellent on an elderly woman and robbed her of her seven sovereign jewellery on Thursday, has been arrested by police using CCTV footage.
Police said the suspect Raghunathan, an AC mechanic, was known to the family. Wearing a mask he knocked the door of the victim’s house at Abhiramapuram on Thursday evening.
“When the victim Lalitha opened the door, she saw a man wearing a mask. Suddenly, he sprayed an insect repellent and made her faint. When she regained consciousness, she found her gold jewellery missing,” said a police officer.
Scanning the CCTV footage from nearby buildings, police found that the suspect was wearing a mask before entering the apartment complex.
“The victim identified him as Raghunathan. She said he had been asking money from her since he was facing a lot of financial problems recently,” the officer said. Raghunathan has been remanded to judicial custody.
Minor fire at furniture showroom in Royapettah
A minor fire broke out at a furniture mart at Royapettah on Friday afternoon, around 12.30 pm. “A small fire broke out at a furniture store situated near a shopping complex. Two fire tenders doused the fire,” said a police officer.A case has been registered and investigation is on.
