NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor has urged the Delhi government to take steps to reduce the financial burden on parents caused by private schools, alleging that schools are forcing families to spend heavily on uniforms, shoes and other educational items.

In a letter to Education Minister Ashish Sood, Kapoor said private schools were requiring students to buy separate summer, winter, sports and activity uniforms, along with three types of shoes.

He alleged that these items were sold at high prices through school-designated vendors. Kapoor said families with two or more children end up spending thousands of rupees every year, with growing children often requiring new uniforms twice a year.

He made two requests to the government. From April 1, 2028, he sought a mandate for only one simple, single-colour uniform in all private schools, with uniforms and shoes made available freely in the market.

He also sought a ban, from April 1, 2027, on schools selling books, stationery, bags and uniforms to new admissions. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood would take a swift decision in the public interest.

Uniforms at high prices

Kapoor said families with two or more children end up spending thousands of rupees every year, with children often requiring new uniforms. He also alleged that some schools have uniforms designed by designers at high prices.
