HYDERABAD: The Cambridge ESOL courses/examinations were launched in the Stateon Tuesday. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of OtherLanguages and is a certification offered by the Cambridge University for people who want to take English language courses for career advancement and other purposes.

ESOL has been launched in partnership with the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT), which will provide the training for the students, examination centers and other facilities. A CfBT representative refused to disclose the price range for courses.

The courses have been divided broadly into General English, for academic purposes and for professional purposes. The levels in each course run from A1 (signifying entry level knowledge of English), A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 (signifying mastery over English). A candidate who wants to take the course will be evaluated for spoken and written skills and then assigned an appropriate course. For instance people who want proficiency in business English can take the business english certificate. School students can opt for the key English test, preliminary English test or the first certificate in English. All these courses test the candidates proficiency in everyday spoken and written English.

Michael Latham, Director, South Asia CfBT said, “The conditions are right for such a course because there is huge demand and we have the technology to deliver education in different formats”. Jonathan Greenwood, Director, International Group, CfBT said, “The Cambridge ESOL reaches out to 3 million people every year and our partnership with them combines our training methods with Cambridge’s certification”.
