If you’re up for some experimentation with your look on your wedding day, how about one that screams romance and free-spirit? We’re talking about the boho-bride, a topic Bangalore-based designer Sanchita Ajjampur is delighted to expand on. “Think woodland spirit, chic hippie, or nature lover, rather than traditional bride,” she offers, encouraging brides to be adventurous. “The bohemian bride will be happiest with an outdoor wedding --- lots of pretty informal flowers and of course, a unique wedding dress, sari or ghaghra, which shows off her eclectic style,” she adds, advising brides to “avoid structured bodices, ball skirts, and heavy sequins.’’ In addition, she suggests flowing fabrics such as chiffon and soft net, and fabric flowers and overlays. Thumbing your nose at the big fat Indian wedding ritual may sound like fun, but can be difficult to pull off given the importance attached to ceremony in our country. Designer Anamika Khanna stresses that the look should be carefully coordinated and personalised. She suggests light and subtle colours. “If your wedding is on a beach, wear a simple chiffon dress in shades of pink, yellow or pistachio. Team with a pair of sandals in gold or silver or go for contrasting shades to create a mismatched, yet fun look,” she offers. Vintage floral or lace dresses are big this season when it comes to the wedding outfit. “A boho bride could wear ivory lace gowns, simple dresses in cotton-silk with lace trimming or cream dresses where the back has crochet work,” offers designer Shilpa Chavan or Little Shilpa. As for accessories, Ajjampur suggests ‘‘hand-embellished sandals or wedges for the feet as they are very fashion forward and comfortable.” As for make-up, designer Rina Dhaka says that it should be minimalistic for the boho bride, with the mouth being the biggest feature. “Use lighter tones and understated shades for your foundation and make-up. Stick with rich maroons and reds for your lip-wear,” she says. Ajjampur agrees. “Make-up should be fuss free, in translucent shades. Use earthy tones for the eyes and cheeks. And a neutral shaded lip-gloss or lipstick.”
