Those who talk more about themselves, more likely to be depressed

Express News Service

Their kind has always been a put-off and now it seems people who can’t help but often talk about themselves are more prone to depression and anxiety.

Scientists at the University of Kassel, Germany led a research that inferred that people who use first-person singular pronouns the most are more likely to be depressed than those who tend to use plural pronouns, such as ‘we’.

Led by Dr Johannes Zimmerman, the team interviewed 15 men and 103 women, most of whom were being treated for conditions such as depression and anxiety disorder. The participants were asked about their past, their relationships, and their self-perception. They found that people who say ‘me’ and ‘I’ ‘tend to be more depressed, and also they have more difficulties with interpersonal behaviour such as interacting in a group of people.

Such personalities are more likely to seek attention and to be unable to spend time alone. On the other hand, those who use words like ‘we’ a lot were better at maintaining social boundaries in their relationships and enjoyed a healthy social life.
