Lake sediments pile up in city

S Bachan Jeet Singh

Over 40,000 cubic metres (cum) of dry sediments collected through dredging process at Sanjeevaiah Park on Necklace Road some months ago have got piled up as Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) failed to transport the waste to the dumping site.

Heaps of sediments near the park is now a cause for concern for the HMDA authorities in view of the monsoon season which is all set to arrive in the second week of next month. Few spells of heavy rains will make the dry sediments wet and there are chances of the sediments getting washed back into the Hussainsagar Lake.

Meanwhile, removal of sediments at the mouths of three storm water drains namely Picket nala, Banjara nala and Balkapur nala through two dredger machines, which is the a crucial component of the Hussainsagar and Catchment area Improvement Project (HCIP), has been slowed down completely since several weeks as there is no place to dump the collected waste.

The removal of sediments is part of the Rs 370 crore HCIP project taken up by HMDA with the assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Speaking to Express, HMDA officials admitted that if the state government fails to provide a vacant site to them for dumping the collected waste, the situation would turn bad as the collected waste may get washed away into the lake.

Earlier, a few sites at Budvel, Kothwalguda and Jawaharnagar were identified for dumping of the waste sediments but due to vehement protests from the local residents and political leaders, the proposal to dump the was te was dropped by HMDA. Finally, Rangareddy revenue officials have zeroed it on Gajularamam to dump the waste.

The HMDA is expecting to receive a portion of government land at Gajularamam on the city outskirts from Revenue department through Rangareddy district collector in the next 15 days.

HMDA wants less than 10 acres for dumping the waste.
