Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a rare and incurable disease about which people know little. On Wednesday Multiple Sclerosis society of India (MSSI) observed World Multiple Sclerosis Day through cultural activities involving the patients of MS at City Centre Mall, Banjara Hills. The Hyderabad chapter of MSSI brought patients and their families together to raise a general understanding of the auto-immune disease which effects the central nervous system. The Youth MS group entertained those present through music. Patients participated in a Harlem Shake, a flash mob dance. Sareesh, a patient of Multiple Sclerosis witnessed the performance from a corner. “ I have been suffering from this disease since 2008. I am a watch maker and it is too difficult for me to afford the medicines,” he added.
“Multiple Sclerosis is a disease which effects central nervous system. The causes of this disease are not yet found. It can not be completely cured by treatment but the damage can be reduced by using regular medicines. Loss of vision, numbness and balance disorder are some of its symptoms. However it is not a common disease in India and the incidence is rare,” said Dr. A.K. Meena, neurologist at Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). “The medication for MS is not affordable for everybody. It costs around Rs 30,000 for medicines every month. Since there is no possibility to cure it completely the medication should be continued for lifetime,” added the doctor.
“Though the reasons are unknown, people from 18-35 years are more vulnerable to MS. Sudden problems that arise due this disease can ruin the careers of youngsters. However, many people are afraid to disclose this. They should come forward and show solidarity for a disease that is seldom talked about,” said Meena Gupta, chairperson, MSSI Hyderabad.
