Give Unique Code for Newborn Girls in Telangana and Andhra: HC

Express News Service

HYDERABAD:  A division bench of the High Court has asked the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments to study the possibility of providing a unique electronic code to girls immediately after their birth to monitor their welfare and security.

The bench, comprising acting chief justice Dilip B Bhosale and justice SV Bhatt, while dealing with a taken-up case pertaining to Pratyusha, a 19-year-old victim of parents’ torture, pointed out that a large number of girl children are facing severe problems in the society and it is time for  governments to take concrete steps to come to their rescue and protect them.

“If a unique code could be provided soon after the birth of a girl, it will enable the government to keep a constant watch on her welfare and education and also to keep tab whether the welfare schemes especially designed for welfare of the girl child by the state and central governments are reaching them or not.”

The bench suggested that the authorities  prepare an electronic unique code which can keep track of the girl. If this system is implemented from the village level, it will have a good impact on the lives of girls, it opined.

While asking the Malkajgiri tahsildar to ensure the welfare and safety of Pratyusha, the bench asked the counsels of both the states whether the governments had prepared any schemes for the welfare of girls like Pratyusha.

Reacting to the submissions of P.Venugopal, advocate-general of AP, that there are many schemes in force for the welfare of girls in Andhra Pradesh, the bench said they are not properly being implemented at the rural level.
