HYDERABAD: Concerned over increasing number of road accidents involving two-wheeler riders in the state, the state government is considering the proposal to implement ‘No helmet-no petrol’ rule.
As per the rule, two-wheeler riders without helmets will be denied fuel in city petrol pumps. This is being implemented in Adilabad district since June 2.
The city traffic police is studying the effects of the rule in Adilabad. Barring two incidents where two-wheeler drivers picked up arguments with attendants at petrol pumps in Adilabad, the rule did not draw ire of two-wheeler owners there.
A few days ago, Kerala government had announced that the rule would be implemented in the state from August 1, starting with three cities on a pilot basis.
Transport department officials in Adilabad held a meeting with petrol pump dealers and owners before imposing the rule.
“They extended support. Thereafter, we advertised two to three weeks in advance that petrol will not be provided if helmets are not used. My staff and I went to pumps to sensitize people about the rule,” in-charge deputy transport commissioner (DTC) of Adilabad Dr Puppala Sinivas said.
He added that in one incident, a two-wheeler driver got furious when he was denied petrol and prepared to physically attack an attender.
AV Ranganath, DCP (Traffic-II), said, “After the feedback from Adilabad, Hyderabad traffic police will hold a meeting with the civil supplies department and the city’s fuel station owners and take a call on the implementation.”
