Rain throws life out of gear in city

HYDERABAD: Heavy rains lashed city in the wee hours of Wednesday and continued till afternoon causing water logging and heavy traffic jams across all important junctions in the city. By Wednesday morning 8.30am, the highest rainfall that was recorded in Hyderabad was 7.1 cm at Uppal. Amberpet recorded 6.5 cm, LB Nagar recorded 5.6 cm, Ramachandrapuram recorded 5.5 cm and other localities such as Asmangadh, Narayanguda, Nampally, Balanagar, Asifnagar, Pashamylaram, Bollaraam, Mir Alam, Moula Ali, Musheerabad and Madhapur recorded between 2 cm and 5 cm. 

From Wednesday morning till evening, the highest rainfall was recorded at 5cm in Amberpet. 
As a result of the heavy rains, roads in many areas of the city got inundated causing water logging and bringing traffic to a standstill. For example, travelling from Kukatpally to Chandanagar which usually takes 20 minutes, took close to an hour, informed a commuter. Similarly, the journey from Tarnaka to Somajiguda which does not take more than 45 minutes took close to two hours, journey from Nizampet to Panjagutta which does not take more than 40 minutes took more than 90 minutes and the small distance from Narayanguda towards Liberty crossroads took close to half hour rather than regular 10 minutes, informed various commuters. 

As per the Hyderabad traffic police, traffic came to a standstill due to water logging at Amberpet 6 number junction, from Moosarambagh and Malakpet to Nalgonda crossroad, from Rasoolpura towards Begumpet flyover, Greenlands Junction, SD Eye Hospital, Masab Tank, Mahaveer Hospital, Ayodhya Junction, Lakdi ka pul, from Secunderabad towards Begumpet, Panjagutta, Alugadda bavi, Rail Nilayam, Sangeeth crossroad, St John’s Rotary, YMCA flyover, CTO flyover, PNT flyover, RTC crossroad, Iqbal Minar, from Telephone Bhavan towards old Saifabad police station, Ramanthapur TV Studio towards Amberpet 6 number junction and from there towards Shivam road and from Fateh Nagar towards Balkampet temple. 
Heavy rainfall was witnessed across other parts of Telangana, mostly in the districts of Khammaam, Nirmal, Jangaon, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Jagtial and Peddapalli. 

The maximum rainfall from Wednesday morning till evening was recorded at 10.8cm in Khammam. 
However, no heavy rainfall warning exists for Thursday. India Meteorological Department said that light to moderate rainfalls will occur at a few places over Telangana on Thursday.
