KARIMNAGAR: A video clip showing suspended Assistant Sub Inspector Mohan Reddy, lodged in Karimnagar district jail, meeting his relatives inside the officer’s room has become viral, with victims of the policeman’s high handedness slamming the authorities. The video clip of a ‘special mulakhat’ for Mohan Reddy with his family members in jail official’s room, was released to the media on Friday. Victims Association of ASI Mohan Reddy president Musuku Mahender Reddy alleged that the prison authorities are allowing toothsome food from outside for the officer and allowing him to meet unlimited number of people, unofficially.
Mohan Reddy, who rose to prominence while working on anti-left wing operations, was arrested two years ago on charges of driving a private school owner to commit suicide over financial matters. Following his arrest, several others approached the police claiming the officer had occupied their properties illegally, in some cases at gunpoint.
Mahendar Reddy claimed the CID,which registered the cases, was moving at snail’s pace. He, meanwhile, appreciated the ACB for registering illegal assets cases and sending him to jail about seven months ago.
Loksatta Udyama Samstha representatives N Srinivas and Prakash Holla demanded stringent action against erring jail officials. Higher officials of Prison department inquired about the episode of special treatment. Prisons DIG B Saidaiah conducted day-long inquiries on Thursday. Prison authorities managed to keep the inquiry a secret. A complaint was lodged with higher officials with serious allegations, sources said.
Jail Superintendent N Shiva Kumar Goud said that ASI Mohan Reddy’s mulakhat with family members was legal. In the presence of Deputy Jailor and advocate, permission was given for the meeting. Family members of Mohan Reddy’s visit were registered in the jail records on November 13, he clarified. The department said superintendent has full discretion to decide whom he should allow ‘mulakats’ to. “The superintendents’ decision is no violation of law,” said VK Singh, director general, Prisons and Correctional Services.
