HYDERABAD: Throwing more light on the thriving sex-determination industry in the city, a decoy operation has led to busting of a diagnostic centre and a reproductive health centre which allegedly worked in tandem to organise sex determination tests.

In-charge District Medical and Health Officer(DMHO) of Hyderabad Dr IA Sarala said they sealed the Jyothi Reproductive Health Centre in Ameerpet and Sujatha Scanning Centre in Yosufguda. Notices were served to them for allegedly violating Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques  (Prohibition of Sex Selection Act,1994.

East Zone Task Force Police team conducted a decoy operation on Tuesday night where they found that two women who work at Jyothi Reproductive Health Centre took patients to seek sex determination tests to Sujatha Scanning Centre. The two women T Sunitha, M Swapna,  are ASHA workers, who work on part time basis at the hospital. The in-charge DMHO said that Dr Gandhi who owns the scanning centre has performed the sex determination tests. “He used portable diagnostic equipment which was banned long ago. We seized the machines too. While the scanning centre’s licence renewal is pending with us, we might not renew it,” Dr Sarala said.
