KOCHI: Was yoga guru Baba Ramdev planning to launch his yoga initiatives in the Lakshadweep islands?  About a year after the controversial visit of Acharya Balkrishna, the close aide of Ramdev, to the Lakshadweep islands, rumours are rife that attempts were on by Ramdev followers to launch a yoga centre in the islands.

The visit of Acharya Balkrishna as nation’s guest to the islands in June 2010 had led to some controversies.  “There were allegations that he had made the students buy his books and the administration misused the helicopter services for his visit to each island. The helicopter, which was meant only for essential services, was used for his travel. There were controversies associated with the visit,” said a senior leader and member of Lakshadweep central committee of the party.  Meanwhile, Nizamudeen Koya, deputy collector, said the visit was to carry out yoga classes in the islands.
