Express News Service

The CITU district committee will organise a dharna in front of the BSNL office at Vytilla on Wednesday demanding labour-friendly laws.

It will be inaugurated by K M Sudhakaran by 10 am. Speaking to ‘Express’, K N Gopinath, CITU district secretary, said the dharna would be organised in relation with the demands raised in the national-level general strike that was conducted in February.

“The general strike witnessed unprecedented unity of several trade unions. It was decided that the spirit of the strike should be taken forward through consistent struggles. In this dharna we are raising the major demands like ensuring minimum wage for any job as `10,000, providing contract workers the same wages of permanent workers, to ensure pension and other welfare benefits for the workers. The CITU is organising dharnas in all districts in front of selected Central Government offices,” Gopinath said.

The CITU office-bearers said the last state conference of the organisation decided to intensify activities among traditionally marginalised section of the workers.

“In Ernakulam, more focus will be on migrant workers as well as new jobs in service sector. Special focus will be there to organise IT workers,” Gopinath said.

Prominent trade union leaders will address the dharna, the office-bearers said.
