MGNREGS ombudsman seeks vigilance probe

Express News Service

Ombudsman for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Ernakulam district, K Chenthamarakshan has found serious irregularities in the implementation of the scheme in Amballoor grama panchayat.

He said the scheme had been sabotaged in letter and spirit in Amballoor panchayat and he has suggested Vigilance probe into the issue.

The ombudsman said he had received anonymous complaints during the last week of March alleging that “many muster rolls were fraudulently created by agencies implementing the scheme in Amballoor panchayat for enhancing expenditure”. “I forwarded a complaint to the JPC with a direction to dispose of the case and report compliance with the order. Instead of disposing of the complaint in accordance with law by the JPC, relying on clause 10.2 of ‘Instructions on Ombudsman’, the complaint was neglected,” he said.

“I was forced to initiate suo moto proceedings because of the indifferent attitude of the JPC in finding out the truth,” he said.
