KOCHI: Adorned with precious stones and trimmed with gold foil, Tanjore paintings are one of the costliest and impeccable art pieces of the country. Originated in Tanjore, in Tamil Nadu, these genre of paintings are famous for their use of rich colours, vivid details and unique compactness. Crafted with meticulous care the Tanjore paintings speak of richness and class.

And now children and homemakers can learn this expensive artform for free at the workshop organised by Thurika Kalaikoodam, Coimbatore. The workshop at Changampuzha Park conducts classes in original Tanjore painting, Tanjore glass painting, quilling graft and terracotta jewellery making.

Jyothi Krishnan who is into Tanjore painting for the past 25 years is teaching the art at the workshop. Ask her about the difference in original Tanjore painting and glass Tanjore painting, she says, “Original Tanjore painting uses golden foil, precious stones, poster colour and Tanjore painting board whereas in the glass variety, fabric colour, golden colour, varnish, foil paper and printed glass are used.”

“The participants need to only give the material charge as original 22 carat gold foils and other precious and semi precious stones goes into the making of Tanjore paintings,” says Jyothi who is a craft teacher by profession. “Homemakers can become self-reliant and can earn extra bucks from Tanjore paintings. And our workshop aims in the upliftment of these women,” she adds. The material charge for learning Tanjore painting is `1650 and for Tanjore glass painting, quilling graft and Terracotta jewellery making, the material charge is `850. The workshop at Changampuzha Park will end on May 16. On May 17 and 18, the workshop will be held at Thykoodam, Kadathukadav and on May 19 and 20 at Samarth Yoga Darshan, Mattanchery.
