Perandoor canal clean-up making good progress: District Collector K Mohammad Y Safeerulla

KOCHI: The ongoing mission to clean-up the Perandoor canal, which was launched following the High Court directive in this regard, is indeed making good progress, District Collector K Mohammad Y Safeerulla said here after taking stock on Sunday.

The removal of weeds on the canal’s Kamattipadam, P & T Colony and Udaya Colony stretch is also taking place, with floating JCBs being pressed into service by the Corporation.

The cleaning up of the canal’s stretch from the GCDA market to P & T colony will be completed by June 30, said Corporation secretary A S Anuja. During the inaugural phase, cleaning is being undertaken in 3.7 km of the  10.5 km-long canal.

The Collector will submit a detailed report in this regard before the High Court. According to Safeerulla, steps will be initiated to find a permanent solution to the waterlogging plaguing the areas from the South Railway Station to Gandhinagar. Around 5.85 lakh has already been spent on the cleaning activities.
