Kerala Municipality Act Bill tabled in Assembly

Express News Service

The Kerala Municipality Act amendment (2013) Bill, which aims to do away with the annual revision of property tax and introduce a system where it would be assessed once every five years, was tabled in the Assembly.

Presenting the Bill, Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali sought the Assembly’s nod on a government decision to make the approval of municipal corporations mandatory for operating new liquor shops within their area.

The Bill was tabled for replacing an ordinance which the Governor had cleared in January this year.

The Bill also proposes to exempt government-approved educational institutions up to highest secondary level from paying property tax. The Bill was forwarded to the subject committee.
