Concern over 'follies' of lotteries department

Express News Service

Despite a huge turnover expected to touch Rs 3,000 crore this fiscal, the State Lotteries Department is crippling with lack of professionalism, if the incidents of mistakes in ticket printing are any indication.

Lottery agents too have raised their concern over the incidents which would affect the goodwill of the state lotteries.

Recently, tickets of Dhanasree lotteries with the same serial number were found in Pathanamthitta but the issue didn’t turn for the worse as the number could not fetch any prize.

“We had raised the issue with the government. The state lotteries is having good times now but incidents like this would dampen the spirit of buyers,” said Purushothama Bharathi, president of the Kerala Lottery Agents’ Association.

Lottery Department officials, who cite heavy workload at printing presses for the mistakes, said that the government was turning a blind eye to their long pending demand for facilitating ticket printing in more presses.

Around two-and-a-half crore tickets of seven weekly lotteries are printed at the Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS) press in Ernakulam and the Kerala State Centre for Advanced Printing and Training (C-apt) press in Thiruvananthapuram.

Though the State Government had earlier said that printing facility would be arranged at the Government Press, Mannanthala, it is yet to materialise.
