CM moots law for development of Malayalam language

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on Tuesday that the government would introduce a law aimed at the comprehensive development of the Malayalam language.

 The government has also entrusted the Vice-Chancellor of the Thunchathu Ezhuthachchan Malayalam University K Jayakumar to formulate an action plan for the all-round development of the Malayalam Language, Chandy said.

 A decision regarding this will be taken after consultations with all political parties, Chandy said after a meeting of cultural leaders called in the wake of Malayalam being accorded classical language status.

 There should be an action plan for the all-round progress of the language. Also necessary is concerted effort by various agencies and organisations connected to the Malayalam language. The Thunchathu Ezhuthachchan Malayalam University should act as the cordinating agency, Chandy said.

 The action plan will be implemented on the first of Chingam through schools in the state, he said. He also blamed the delay in Malayalam being accorded the status on the wrong conclusions drawn by the experts at the time.

 Ministers K C Joseph and P K Abdu Rabb, poet O N V Kurup, Sugathakumari, linguist and schoalr R E Asher, filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Puthussery Ramachandran, K L Mohana Varma, George Onakkoor were among those present.
