Hosts Sainik School, Kazhakootam, won the 9th Captain R Harshan Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament on Saturday, defeating Navjeevan Bethany Vidyalaya.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hosts Sainik School, Kazhakootam, won the 9th Captain R Harshan Memorial Inter-School Basketball Tournament on Saturday, defeating Navjeevan Bethany Vidyalaya 65-48 to lift the trophy. Cadet Amarnath Pratap Singh of Sainik School was adjudged ‘Best player of the tournament’ while Milan Mathew Varghese of runner-up Navjeevan Bethany Vidyalaya emerged top scorer. Major General Anoop Kumar V, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate (Kerala and Lakshaweep), who is also an alumnus of the winner school gave away trophies and medals to winners.

Twelve public schools from Thiruvananthapuram and nearby places competed in the latest edition of the tournament which was inaugurated by Colonel A Rajiv, principal of Sainik School, Kazhakootam, earlier this week. The tournament is organised by the school’s Old Boys Association in collaboration with their Alma Mater in the memory of Captain R Harshan of the 1997 batch. 

Harshan, a member of the elite ‘Red Devil’ unit of 2nd Para (Special Forces) sacrificed his life fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir on March 20, 2007. The nation honoured him posthumously with the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, in 2008.
