PTE Academic test for English language proficiency from Pearson is slowly gaining prominence in India competing with established tests like IELTS and TOEFL. Edex caught up with Carl Rhymer, global sales director, language testing at Pearson, on the flexibility this new kid on the block has to offer and other plans of Pearson.
“PTE Academic test was established in 2009 and since then has been accepted by most Australian and UK institutes. We are working towards getting more US institutes on board while Ivy leagues like Harvard and Yale have already given the nod,” begins Rhymer.
What is the USP of PTE?
“Definitely, its flexibility. If you look at IELTS, you can take the test at only fixed dates — probably four times a month. Our tests run all days a week, and what’s more, you can schedule your tests as early as 48 hours before,” he lists the benefits. Not able to escape comparisons to IELTS, he vouches that the test is neither difficult nor easy vis-a-vis its well known competitor. “It is just a different test.”
Rhymer suggests comprehensive preparation for the test. “For the purpose of aiding test takers with the right resources and materials, we have tied up with MacMillan to launch practice test books early next year. These books will be of great help to crack the PTE Academic test, which follows an integrated model. The test throws up a mixed lot of questions on reading comprehension, vocabulary and other aspects of English,” he concludes.
