‘Blinded’ by love: Real life inspires reel life

Director S Narayan will make a film based on the story of Raghu who lost his eyes in an attack by his lover’s relatives.

BANGALORE: Director S Narayan is all set to direct a movie based on the story of Raghu who recently lost his two eyes in his love affair with Anusha. Anusha’s relatives attacked Raghu after inviting him to attend her wedding last week.

The director who was touched by Raghu’s story is planning to make a movie about him. “The incident itself is a shocking one. It is unfortunate. But it’s worth telling,” he told City Express. The director visited the Narayan Nethralaya, met the victim and sought permission for making a film based on his life. “My son Pankaj will be playing the character of Raghu. The shooting will begin in June,” he informed.

Sandalwood has seen many real life incidents being made into reel life stories. City Express takes a look at a few of the prominent ones.

'Cyanide’

‘Cyanide’, released in 2006 was a movie that created a lot of waves. AMR Ramesh chose to tell the story centered around the incidents that occurred in and around Bangalore following former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assasination. It traces the story of Shivarasan and Shubha who fled from Chennai and made their way to Bangalore. After the success of ‘Cyanide’, the director is reportedly planning to make a movie on Velupillai Prabhakaran. Another movie on the life of Veerappan is also on the cards.

‘Police Quarters’

After receiving critical appreciation from ‘Cyanide’, AMR Ramesh went on to retell the story of two lovers who were killed due to religious differences. The aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition trickled down even to Karnataka and touched the lives of two people in love. ‘Police Quarters’ was released in 2010. The Tamil version of this film (‘Kavalar Kudiyiruppu’) was released on 29 January 2010.

The story is centered around Ashwin and Anita. Tragedy strikes after the Babri Masjid demolition. Things take a dramatic turn from there.

‘Bheema Theeradalli’

Chandappa Harijan, the 34-year-old notorious contract killer was shot dead in the year 2000 by a special team of Gulbarga police in an encounter at Dhothari village near Akkalkot in Solapur district of Maharashtra. The story of this notorious criminal is now being made into a movie. The movie, directed by Om Prakash Rao has Vijay in the lead role. Titled, ‘Bheema Theeradalli’, the movie is produced by Anaji Nagaraj. The director says that he has done extensive research about the life that Chandappa Harijan led.

‘Krishnan Love Story’

The movie is based on the story of a small-time actor Pradeep, who acted in the movie ‘Josh’. Directed by Shashank, the movie is a love story. On the 50th day celebration of the movie, the director revealed to the world the name of the man, who gave him inspiration for ‘Krishnan Love Story’, which he had kept a secret till then. Ajay and Radhika Pandit play the lead roles in the movie.

The story revolves around a middle-class guy, Krishna, who falls in love with a lower middle-class girl Geetha.

‘Kambalahalli’

The atrocity at Kambalahalli village in Chintamani taluk on March 10, 2000 shocked Karnataka.

Dalits were assaulted by upper cast Hindus burning seven of them alive. This formed the backbone of the movie that shares the name with the village it is set in. A state award winner for best story, the movie was directed by Senthilnathan and produced by Munirathnam. This movie, apart from being a big success and critics’ favourite, also sends a strong message to the audience about caste tolerance.
