Alby and Meera are a match made in heaven. With their doting 10-year-old, it’s sheer domestic bliss until an incident alters it all. ‘Kumbasaram’, starring Jayasurya and Honey Rose in the lead, boasts of a taut, suspense-packed storyline. “It’s an emotional thriller woven around a serious subject,” says director Aneesh Anwar. His second outing after much-noted ‘Zachariyayude Garbhinikal’, the film zooms into the life of an auto driver as his world starts withering.

The film, set in a nondescript small town, starts with a confession as the hero bares his soul in front of the audience. “He is the one who narrates the story. Alby and Meera had an inter-caste marriage and ten years down the line they are a happy couple with their son Jerry,” he explains the basic story premise. Though there are financial worries their life is quite trouble-free. “But everything changes when a tragedy befalls on the family and the film chronicles Alby’s efforts to overcome the tumult,” he adds.

Along with the main track, the film also paints a picture of friendship. “The bond of Jerry and his friends Resul, Abhijith and Gouri is the real backbone of the narrative,” says Aneesh. While Alby is struggling to sort out things, he gets caught in a dangerous web. “And what happens in the adult world affects the kids too.  The children are not spared the impact,” he says.

Aneesh says since the film deals with a heavy theme it doesn’t have much lighter moments. “You will not find any comedy track in the film. The seriousness of the subject is reflected in the narrative pattern as well.” And though ‘Kumbasaram’ fits the format of a hardcore thriller, it doesn’t have any investigative angle. “It’s not a murder mystery or any such routine thing. Though it belongs to that genre it has a lot of positivity about it,” he says.

Apart from the lead actors, Shanavas and Priyanka also appear in key roles. Aneesh says both the characters have a crucial part in the development of plot. “It will be a real comeback for them both. Shanavas plays Paul Varghese, but nothing more can be revealed about his character now. Priyanks appears as Ayisha, mother of Jerry’s friend Resul” he says. Tini Tom, Vineeth and Asha Aravind are also part of the cast.

‘Kumbasaram’, produced by Niyas Ismail, is expected to hit the screens this week.
