After their successful teaming in 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini', Dhanush and Jawahar get together again in 'Kutty'. And like the earlier film, this one too is a remake of the Telugu hit 'Arya'.
It’s a love triangle with a college campus as the backdrop, the scene shifting to a more picturesque locale towards the latter part. The players here are Arjun (Dhyan, with some Kannada and Hindi films to his credit), who falls for Gita and woos her relentlessly, emotionally blackmailing her into reciprocating and dating him; Gita (Shreya) is timid, initially resists but succumbs to Arjun’s pressure. And Kutty (Dhanush) is a new student in the college, who too falls for Gita and woos her unabashedly. What differentiates this love story is in the etching of the characters of the two youths. While Arjun is a rich spoiled, selfish brat, possessive of Gita, holding her like his prized possession, 'Kutty' is the unselfish, sacrificing lover. Gita’s happiness is of prime importance to him. 'Kutty' even puts his life in jeopardy, and helps the lovers cross many hurdles like parental opposition.
Dhanush cruises through the role with easy comfort, and contributes a lot to the humour quotient of the film. A new face would probably have suited and lend some freshness to the role of Gita. The supporting cast like Vincent Ashokan as the politician’s hireling Muthu, Srinath as Arjun’s friend, and Mayilsamy in a cameo, leave their mark. It’s a breezy, fluffy entertainer, with its lagging moments in the latter part, where in Arjun’s absence Kutty turns protector to Gita. The ending is on expected lines. For, it’s not the only film, which has had this turn-around in the end. And like many of the situations here, it’s a scenario, which the audiences are used to.
