Inspired sensitivity

BHUBANESWAR: The delicate evolution of the father-daughter relationship, and the former’s reluctance to accept that his daughter has grown up, is narrated with humour and sensitivity in Abhiyum Naanum. However, it seems to be heavily inspired by the Hollywood comedy Father of the Bride.

Narrated by the father, Raghuram (Prakash Raj), the film explores his affection that often borders on obsession for daughter Abhi (Trisha). Only when Abhi introduces her beau, Jogi (Ganesh), does Raghu realise that his daughter is no longer a little girl.

The light moments between father and daughter touch a chord. The slow pace can be a tad boring at times.  As in Mozhi, the characters are colourful, interesting and quirky. Like the beggar, splendidly played by Kumaravel. Or the boisterous, extended family of Jogi who flock to Raghu’s home. Also interesting is Manobala as Raghu’s buddy, and their on-screen rapport. The director incorporates little social-awareness messages. Like the instance when little Abhi brings home a beggar, and her parents give him refuge and social status.  Prakash Raj carries the film on his shoulders with conviction. But the camaraderie between little Abhi and Raghu is missing during the latter half. Ganesh Venkatram (winner of the 2003 ‘Gladrags Manhunt’ contest) is charming as Jogi. Yet another feel-good entertainer from the Mozhi team.
