J Mahendran, who has directed gems like Mullum Malarum, Uthiripookal, Nenjathai Killathey, Johnny, passed away on April 2nd, 2019. He was 79 years old. Mahendran played an important role in making Rajinikanth the star he is today with his collaborations with the actor all turning out to become huge blockbusters.
