HYDERABAD: The convicts of the Dilsukhnagar twin bomb blasts moved an appeal before the High Court on Monday against the death sentence awarded to them by the NIA Special Court here.
On December 13 the NIA Special Court, while terming the crime as ‘rarest of rare’, convicted five operatives of Indian Mujahideen for their involvement in two consecutive bomb explosions that took place at Dilsukhnagar in the city in 2013.
On December 19 the special court awarded death sentence to the convicts.
The covicts - Yaseen Bhatkal, Asadullah Akhtar, Zia ur Rahman, Mohammed Tahseen and Aizaz Saeed Shaik were found guilty of carrying out the blasts that killed 18 and injured 131 persons.
They approached the High Court contending that the prosecution failed and that they were convicted though the prosecution failed to prove that they were members of Indian Mujahideen.
Meanwhile, NIA judge T Srinivasa Rao referred the matter to the High Court for confirmation of the death sentence.
Their appeals are currently under examination by the registry. The bench of justices CV Nagarjuna Reddy and MSK Jaiswal, before whom the trial court order along with a letter from the judge of the NIA court was placed, heard the matter for a short while.
When it was brought to the notice of the bench about the appeals filed by the accused, the bench adjourned the case to enable the registry to bring both the cases before the bench to hear them together.
