Organisers of Azad Maidan rally to pay for property damage

Express News Service

The organisers of the August 11 Azad Maidan rally against Assam riots that led to violence in the city will be paying a heavy price.

The Mumbai Police are in the process of raising a whooping `2-crore bill towards the damage incurred during the Azad Maidan riots.

The police have cited a Bombay High Court judgment in which the Shiv Sena was directed to pay towards the property damaged during the protest.

Raza Academy, who had organised the rally in protest against the atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar, is being held responsible for the damage done by the rioters.

The rioters had damaged and destroyed several vehicles belonging to police, BEST and private parties, including media outdoor broadcasting vans.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is computing the loss suffered by the state and others during the riots, have worked up a bill of Rs 2.12 crore.

Senior police official said the bill is only conservative and likely to go up in case of more precise loss claim.

Besides, the Mumbai civic body has also sent a loss claim of `3 lakh to the Mumbai Police Commissioner for the damage to 1857 martyr memorial near the civic head office (opposite to Azad Maidan).

The police will be sending the details of the claims to the Collector office which would then initiate the process for recovering the money from the organisers.

If the organisers fail to pay the amount, authorities can even attach their properties for recovering the same
