Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's mother Lakshmi Palaniappan died today.
She was 92, her family said.
She was not keeping well for the past few days and died early this morning, they said.
Meanwhile, a host of political leaders, including former TNCC President K V Thankgabalu, visited the house of Lakshmi Palaniappan to pay their last respects.
The cremation is expected to take place this evening, sources said.
Expressing grief, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Sad to know about demise of Shri P Chidambaram's mother, Smt. Lakshmi Palaniappan. My condolences to the family. May her soul rest in peace".
