Jaitley flays DU’s 4-year degree course

Express News Service

Just a day after admissions to the Delhi University (DU) have begun, Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Arun Jaitley on Thursday demanded that introduction of a four-year graduation course in the varsity be put off until a proper decision has been made by the academia.

Jaitley wrote to Human Resource Development Minister M M Pallam Raju, expressing his apprehensions over the length of the course, and said a final decision on this has to be made at the discretion of the academia.

“Many like me would respect the decision of the academic community,” he said.

Jaitley said he believed that adequate discussion has not been held within the university before making a final switch to a four-year programme.

Even the content of the curriculum has not been clearly discussed at various faculties and departments, he lamented.

Jaitley noted that the socio-economic impact of changing three-year course into a four-year period has not also been factored. He alleged that authorities concerned have not explained why such a switch was meant only for one university.
