MP's nephew alleges extortion bid

Express News Service

A nephew of Theni Congress MP J M Haroon Rashid lodged a complaint with CB-CID IG MN Manjunatha on Thursday, seeking action against a person who claimed to be a CB-CID Inspector and demanded `25 lakh to drop his name from the IPL betting probe.

Speaking to Express, JMA Shahul Hameed, a nephew of Haroon, said Madhavan, a friend, had introduced him to one Prince, who, in turn, introduced him to another person named Durai, who claimed to be a CB-CID Inspector. The trio demanded `25 lakh, claiming that his name had cropped up in the ongoing IPL betting probe.

“I was shocked to learn this. They kept insisting on money and abused me. I do not even watch IPL matches, but they claimed that I indulged in betting. Since they knew that I was from a wealthy background they were trying to extort money from me by threatening me in this manner,” he said.

Shahul also claimed that he had not seen Durai in person and had spoken to him only on phone and that Madhavan and Prince would be able to identify Durai.

“We checked here and found that there was none by name Durai,” he said and added that he had also submitted a petition to City Police Commissioner S George as well seeking action against the trio.
