KOCHI: The Legal Metrology Department registered a case against Indian Super League (ISL) organisers as food and beverages were allegedly sold at an exorbitant price in Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi during the ISL matches. On December 4, Legal Metrology Department raided the food stalls inside the stadium and closed it down finding mass violation of Legal Metrology Act.
"Even though it was the contractor who was selling products at exorbitant prices, ISL did not take any measure to prevent overcharging. In fact, the contractor was selling products for ISL. So, we have registered a case against ISL as well," said R Ram Mohan, deputy controller, Legal Metrology Department.
According to him, a case was charged under section 36(1) of Legal Metrology Act against ISL and the contractor who was assigned to sell the food and beverages inside the stadium during ISL matches.
The section 31(1) of Legal Metrology Act states that whoever manufactures, packs, imports, sells, distributes, delivers or otherwise transfers, offers, exposes or possesses for sale, or causes to be sold, distributed, delivered or otherwise transferred, offered, exposed for sale any pre-packaged commodity which does not conform to the declarations on the package as provided in this Act, shall be punished with fine which may extend to Rs 25,000.
Legal Metrology Department will file a report, after an investigation at the court on the basis of which charges would be framed against ISL and its contractor. Later the court would decide whether to penalise the ISL or to acquit them.
