LUCKNOW: With the Supreme Court holding instant talaq, or talaq-e-biddat, illegal, ulemas and maulvis in Uttar Pradesh have moved to include a special lesson on the provisions of talaq in consonance with Shariat in the syllabus of madarsas with an intent to enlighten Muslims about the practice so that it could not be misused to torment the half population.
According to Maulana Shahbudin Razvi, national general secretary, Jamat Raza-e-Mustafa, an influential organisation of the Barelvi sect of Sunnis, a meeting of clerics associated with madarsas was called post-Supreme Court verdict to thatch out a strategy to educate the community about the ‘correct ways of divorce’ as have been envisaged in Shariat.
“The clerics were urged to educate the community through students. They have also been urged to explain people the correct ways of talaq at Friday prayers and at religious congregations,” said Razvi.
On the other, head, Darul Ifta Manzare Islam of Dargah Ala Hazrat, Mufti Sayed Kafil Hashmi felt that in a majority of cases the safeguards provided in Shariat over divorce were overlooked by the community mainly due to lack of knowledge.
“It is high time that the members of the community are taught right way of practising the provisions of talaq as per the sunnat. So it has been decided to make the community aware of it at madarsa level,” he stated. However, Razvi, while favoured shunning instant talaq, he also urged the muslim women not to take their personal matters to courts.
